Pathfinder of Rwanda's hills, based in Kigali

Rwanda often impresses with its gentleness and balance. It's a country that unfolds gradually, through its landscapes, its history, and the quality of its welcome.

Charles

Charles guides travelers in discovering Rwanda with a thoughtful, human approach deeply rooted in the field. After exploring much of Central Africa, he has developed a refined knowledge of this region that he loves sharing in all its diversity. Very attentive and responsive, Charles builds trips tailored to each traveler's wishes, from safaris to local encounters, volcanoes, lakes and cultural discoveries. He particularly appreciates Rwanda's uniqueness: a country that is peaceful, well-organized and marked by spectacular nature, where green hills give the journey a very particular rhythm. With him, Rwanda is discovered beyond familiar images, in a closer relationship with the territory and those who bring it to life every day.

Everything you need to know about Rwanda

Our local experts share their knowledge to prepare your trip.

When to visit Rwanda?

Rwanda can be visited year-round, but the calendar greatly influences your on-the-ground experience. The long dry seasons, from June to mid-September and then from December to February, remain the most comfortable for gorilla trekking in Volcanoes Park: trails are passable, visibility is clear, and photos are sharper. The rainy seasons, in March-May and October-November, offer hills of an almost unreal green, more vibrant forests in Nyungwe, and gorilla permits that are sometimes more accessible. As for temperature, altitude smooths out the variations: it's rarely hot, often cool in the evening. For a Rwanda circuit combining primates, Lake Kivu, and the country's memorial sites, July-August remains ideal, provided you book well in advance.

What budget should I plan for a trip to Rwanda?

Rwanda is not a budget destination, and that's by design: the country has chosen low-volume, high-impact tourism. The mountain gorilla trekking permit is fixed at 1,500 USD per person, to which you add chimpanzees at Nyungwe (around 250 USD) and Akagera entry. For a well-planned week-long stay, expect an average of between 4,000 and 6,000 € per traveler, including internal transport, English-speaking guide, and lodges. Luxury quickly climbs with ecolodges like Bisate or Sabyinyo. Conversely, by skipping the primates, a cultural journey around Kigali, Lake Kivu, and the tea routes becomes significantly more accessible.

Why organize your trip with a local agency in Rwanda?

Rwanda is worth the effort: gorilla permits are limited, lodges book up months ahead, and while distances are short, mountain roads move slowly. Working with an English-speaking local agency based in Kigali makes a real difference. We secure Rwanda Development Board permits as soon as quotas open, adjust your itinerary based on your fitness level for the trek, and select guides who can tell the country's story beyond the obvious—including the memory of the genocide, addressed with the care it deserves. Being on the ground also means we can adapt: if rain slows a trail, if a transfer to Gisenyi needs rescheduling, if a spontaneous lunch with a coffee producer around Huye becomes possible.

What to see on a Rwanda tour?

A Rwanda trip often unfolds over ten days, yet it tells a profound story. In the north, Volcanoes National Park concentrates the raw emotion of a face-to-face encounter with mountain gorillas, in the footsteps of Dian Fossey. Further south, Nyungwe Forest is home to chimpanzees, colobus monkeys, and a canopy walk suspended above a sea of trees. Between the two stretches Lake Kivu, its outrigger canoes and fishing villages toward Kibuye and Gisenyi. To the east, Akagera gently reintroduces the Big Five into an atypical savanna. And then there is Kigali, a surprisingly peaceful capital, where the Gisozi Memorial and contemporary art workshops give the land of a thousand hills a depth that no postcard can capture.
