In the heart of East Africa, Rwanda invites you to discover its wonders with a thriving economy and rich culture. Familiarizing yourself with the local currency is essential for a smooth stay. Understanding the country's money helps you shop, taste local cuisine, and move around with ease.
The Rwandan Franc, Symbol of Economic Sovereignty
On April 24, 1964, Rwanda adopted the Rwandan franc (RWF) as its national currency. The National Bank of Rwanda then began issuing this currency. It is divided into 100 cents and is represented by the symbols "RWF" or "RF".
That same year, the first coins, adorned with national and cultural symbols, marked an important step toward the country's financial independence.
Currency Conversion Options
As of December 20, 2024, one Rwandan franc (RWF) is worth approximately 0.00068 euros or 0.00072 US dollars. To simplify, 1 euro equals roughly 1,467 RWF. Since these values fluctuate, use a real-time conversion app. For example, 100 euros correspond to approximately 146,700 RWF. Rwandan currency remains stable against major currencies, and exchange offices in Kigali often offer competitive rates.
Banknotes and Coins in Circulation in Rwanda
Rwanda uses coins ranging from 1 to 100 RWF, made of nickel steel or bronze-aluminum. They are decorated with motifs representing local fauna and culture. Banknotes are available in 500, 1,000, 2,000, and 5,000 RWF denominations.
The current series includes modern security features and highlights the country's heritage. The 500 RWF note depicts schoolchildren with laptops. The 2,000 and 5,000 RWF notes respectively represent Lake Kivu and Kigali Convention Centre, symbols of tourism and economic development.
Are Euros and US Dollars Accepted in Rwanda?
Large tourism establishments in Rwanda, notably in Kigali and tourist-frequented areas, often accept euros and US dollars. High-end hotels, restaurants, and travel agencies commonly use these currencies.
For daily purchases and local markets, the Rwandan franc is essential. Traders only accept banknotes in good condition issued after 2009.
International bank cards, primarily Visa, are accepted at most modern shops in Kigali. American Express is rarely used. Be sure to carry Rwandan francs with you, especially outside major cities.
How to Pay During Your Rwandan Stay?
In Kigali, modern establishments accept Visa and Mastercard, but traditional markets and boutiques prefer cash payments. ATMs are available in the capital and major cities such as Butare and Gisenyi.
In rural areas, it's best to carry cash. Mobile payments, via MTN Mobile Money or Airtel Money, are also convenient and popular with merchants.
Shopping centres like Kigali City Tower have secure payment terminals. For small purchases or public transport, always carry small bills.
Where and How to Exchange Your Money?
Official exchange offices are easily accessible in central Kigali, particularly on Commerce Avenue and near the central market. They offer competitive rates and always provide a receipt for each transaction.
Here are the main options for obtaining Rwandan francs:
- Local banks: open from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. on weekdays, with competitive rates.
- ATMs: available in shopping centres and business districts.
- Hotels: convenient, but with less favourable rates.
Prefer BK Group or Bank of Kigali ATMs to minimize banking fees. Also remember to notify your bank before departure to prevent your card from being blocked.
