Kabwoya Reserve
Kabwoya Reserve
On the shores of Lake Albert, Kabwoya combines off-the-beaten-path safari, 460 bird species, and rare activities in Uganda such as quad biking and fossil hunting.
Located in the Albertine Rift Valley in Uganda, Kabwoya Wildlife Reserve spans 87 square kilometers between the Congo Mountains and Lake Albert. This off-the-radar destination is a must-see when traveling through this country or Rwanda. Its vast savanna plains will captivate you with their remarkable diversity of wildlife species, ranging from the Uganda kob to the olive baboon, passing through the red-billed lark. The reserve will also dazzle you with its exceptional panoramas and unique activities such as fossil hunting.
A Glimpse into the Past
In the 1960s, this area served as an important migration corridor connecting Murchison Falls National Park to the Toro-Semliki Reserve. The shores of Lake Albert once teemed with abundant wildlife, particularly herds of Uganda kob and buffalo.
Unfortunately, intensive poaching decimated the animal population. Faced with this alarming situation, authorities classified the region as a controlled conservation area in 1963, then as a wildlife reserve in 1980. The neighboring Kaiso zone, transformed into a controlled hunting area, played an important role in preserving remaining species.
It was not until 2002 that Kabwoya obtained its current status as a wildlife reserve, marking the beginning of a new era for biodiversity protection.
What to Do in Kabwoya Wildlife Reserve?
Safari
Kabwoya Wildlife Reserve offers guided safaris in 4x4 vehicles. During your adventure, you can admire the majestic Uganda kob, the elegant oribi, the charismatic olive baboon, and the unmissable warthog. The reserve's lands also offer a chance to spot the Jackson's hartebeest, the Defassa waterbuck, the bushbuck, and the elusive common duiker.
For rarer encounters, head toward the areas near the rivers and Lake Albert. Here, hippos have recolonized the peaceful waters.
In the riverine forests along the Hohwa and Wambabya rivers, you may spot forest hogs, chimpanzees, or the graceful black-and-white colobus monkeys. These latter, with their striking pelage, often move through the treetops. The green monkeys, mischievous and quick, also enliven this area.
Safaris in the reserve are particularly memorable at sunrise and sunset, when the site unveils a spectacular tableau of Lake Albert and the blue Congo mountains. For a unique experience, opt for a night safari. This will allow you to discover the reserve from another angle and observe nocturnal animals.
Bird Watching
Passionate about birds? Kabwoya Wildlife Reserve should be included in your itinerary when exploring this region. It ranks among Uganda's finest bird-watching sites and hosts more than 460 species. Some species found in the adjacent Murchison Falls National Park and Semuliki Game Reserve are also observable here.
Among the birds that will capture your attention are the black-capped chickadee, the red warbler, the Ruwenzori prinia, the greater honeyguide, the black-faced woodland warbler, the Neumann's warbler, the Heuglin's francolin, the Rwenzori turaco, the dusky boubou, the Apalis flycatcher, and Grauer's warbler.
Quad Biking, Mountain Biking, or Horse Riding
4x4 vehicles are not the only means of transport for exploring Kabwoya Wildlife Reserve. You can also venture through on quad bike. In fact, it is one of the few parks in Uganda where this activity is available.
It is also possible to cycle here. You will follow a specially designed trail.
For those seeking other ways to explore, horseback safari is another option. This unique experience also facilitates wildlife observation.
Fossil Hunting
Discovering remnants of the past is among the most fascinating experiences offered at Kabwoya. Paleontology enthusiasts will particularly enjoy searching for ancient pottery and arrowheads scattered across the reserve.
This captivating activity is practiced with an expert guide who shares knowledge about the history of the peoples who inhabited these lands. The best times to venture out are early morning or late afternoon, when the light enhances the contours of the terrain.
Fishing
Lake Albert is favorable for fishing. Fishing excursions take place during certain seasons. Several fish species inhabit the water body: Nile perch, catfish, tilapia, etc. You can bring your own rod or rent one on site.
