Transportation modes between Rwandan cities
Long-distance bus companies
Companies like Trinity Express and Volcano Ltd operate daily connections between Rwanda's major cities with modern, air-conditioned buses. These are equipped with comfortable seats and complimentary WiFi for journeys exceeding two hours.
The Kigali-Musanze route takes 3 hours and costs 3,000 FRW, while the Kigali-Huye line connects the south in 4 hours. You can purchase tickets at bus station counters or through the carriers' mobile applications.
Shared taxis and minibuses
Rwandan shared taxis accommodate 10 to 15 passengers and offer a flexible alternative to regular buses. They depart once full and ensure frequent departures to secondary destinations not covered by major companies.
Costs depend on distance, roughly 2,000 FRW for 30 km. Departures are from points near local markets in each city.
Private minibuses complement this offering. They connect peripheral neighborhoods directly to city centers. Widely used by locals, these services accept payment via mobile money with Tap&Go. You'll easily spot them by their distinctive yellow stripe.
Car rental with driver
Renting a car with driver is a practical option to explore Rwanda with complete peace of mind. Experienced drivers know the roads well and share interesting insights into local culture.
Rates start at 85 € per day for a standard sedan, with fuel and insurance included. A 4x4 is recommended for visiting national parks or remote rural areas.
Innovative transportation in Rwanda
GuraRide electric bikes
GuraRide facilitates urban mobility with connected electric bikes. Through a mobile application, you can unlock available bikes at 12 stations distributed throughout the capital.
Four subscription options are available: single ride (500 FRW), daily pass (2,000 FRW), monthly or annual.
Bikes are equipped with GPS and electric assistance, ideal for Kigali's rolling terrain.
This service is easy to pay for by mobile or bank card. It offers 50 km of range and real-time location tracking, appealing to both residents and visitors while being environmentally friendly.
Green mobility projects
Kigali is accelerating its ecological transition with the arrival of 200 electric buses. Starting January 2025, only electric motorcycle taxis will be authorized for new models in circulation.
To support this change, the government offers fiscal incentives such as the elimination of import taxes on electric and hybrid vehicles.
The city is establishing a network of fast-charging stations and encouraging innovative solutions such as swappable batteries for electric motorcycles offered by startups like Ampersand. New lanes reserved for non-motorized transportation modes are also planned.
Which type of transport to choose depending on the season?
Transportation during the rainy season
During the rainy season, from March to May, travel in Rwanda becomes more challenging, particularly on secondary roads often rendered impassable.
Buses from major companies, which use paved main routes, remain a reliable option. Remember to book your tickets in advance as demand increases during this period.
In rural areas, 4x4s often replace regular minibuses. In Kigali, the KBS bus network continues to serve paved roads even during heavy rainfall.
Travel in dry season
From June to September, favorable road conditions make it easy to explore Rwanda, including its most remote sites.
Secondary roads are passable and offer smooth access to traditional villages and Lake Kivu panoramas. Visibility on mountain roads is excellent.
Trips between Kigali and Gisenyi are faster thanks to clear roads. However, remain vigilant regarding fixed speed cameras installed on this busy route during the dry season.
