Murchison Falls National Park

·

Uganda's largest national park, Murchison Falls combines spectacular Nile waterfalls, Big Five safari and chimpanzee tracking in Budongo Forest. Complete guide to plan your journey.

Spanning 3,893 square kilometers, Murchison Falls National Park is Uganda's most vast protected area. The park's main attraction is its breathtaking waterfall, created by a natural bottleneck where the Nile plunges dramatically through a narrow gorge. Offering the chance to observe 4 of the Big Five, along with countless other animal species, this park is essential when planning a combined Rwanda–Uganda safari.

History

European explorers John Speke and James Grant discovered this wild territory in 1862. The following year, Samuel Baker and his wife Florence explored the region and named the falls in honor of Sir Roderick Murchison, then president of the Royal Geographical Society.

The area became a game reserve in 1926, marking the first steps toward its protection. The British government officially established the national park in 1952, creating Uganda's first protected zone.

In the 1960s, the site reached its peak as a tourist destination, attracting over 60,000 visitors each year.

What Makes Murchison Falls National Park Special?

Murchison Falls National Park stands as a unique destination across Uganda and East Africa. Its most remarkable feature is undoubtedly its breathtaking waterfalls, where the Victoria Nile forces its way through a narrow gorge just 7 meters wide, creating the world's most powerful single drop. The cascades thunder down with a staggering flow of 300 cubic meters per second.

The park's exceptional biodiversity further establishes its reputation. Beyond hosting 4 of the Big Five (elephant, leopard, lion and buffalo), it shelters Uganda's largest population of Rothschild giraffes and significant hippopotamus colonies, not to mention its remarkable bird species—526 in total.

Adding to this is its varied ecosystem, comprising vast savannas in the north, dense rainforests in the south, the majestic Nile flowing east to west through its heart, and wetlands teeming with wildlife.

In short, this is one of East Africa's most remarkable natural wonders. Its unique combination of stunning landscapes and faunal diversity promises an unforgettable safari experience.

Activities at Murchison Falls National Park

Beyond classic 4x4 safaris, the park offers a diverse range of activities:

Boat Cruise to Murchison Falls

This cruise departs from Paraa and lasts approximately 3 hours, taking you to the foot of the roaring cascades. The two-deck boat provides privileged vantage points for wildlife observation. Colonies of hippopotamuses lounge in the water while Nile crocodiles bask on the riverbanks. Elephants come to drink at the river, sometimes accompanied by Rothschild giraffes.

Photographers particularly appreciate the 2 p.m. departure, when the setting sun illuminates the falls magnificently. The water mist and deafening roar of the cascades create a truly spectacular atmosphere.

Hike to the Top of Murchison Falls

This trail begins at the base of the falls and extends over 45 minutes through a paved, well-maintained pathway. The moderate elevation gain allows hikers of all levels to reach the viewpoint without major difficulty.

A guide accompanies you along this developed route featuring stairs and handrails. Along the way, shaded rest areas offer opportunities to observe the baboons inhabiting the area.

Wear non-slip shoes and bring sun protection. The waterfall mist provides pleasant cooling. However, be sure to carry water.

Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary Visit

Visit this sanctuary to encounter the white rhinoceros. This now-endangered species was decimated in Murchison Falls National Park and Kidepo National Park during the 1970s conflict. Poaching in the 1990s further devastated populations.

The sanctuary is Uganda's only location where you can see this unique species. Tourists exploring the park frequently make the detour to this site.

Chimpanzee Tracking in Budongo Forest

Budongo rainforest is home to a fascinating community of over 600 chimpanzees. Guided hikes depart early morning or early afternoon. During this 3 to 4-hour immersion, you'll observe these great apes in their natural habitat. Encounter success rates reach 80% thanks to habituation work conducted since the 1990s.

Birdwatching in Kaniyo Pabidi Forest

Northeast of Budongo Forest, 30 minutes' drive from Kichumbanyobo Gate, lies another significant zone within Murchison Falls National Park: Kaniyo Pabidi Forest. This ornithologist's paradise is renowned for its rich birdlife.

Discover over 360 bird species here. With luck, you may spot its two flagship species: the yellow-footed flycatcher and the illiadopsis puveli. Both are endemic.

Other avian species awaiting you in this mahogany-dominated zone include various thrushes, camaropteras, the piping hornbill, Cassini's dabchick, the white-thighed hornbill, white-spotted flufftail and the green sunbird, among others.

Camping in Rabongo Forest

Experience unique camping in the heart of Rabongo Forest. This well-secured site is ideal for spending a night immersed in nature. As evening falls, forest sounds and cool air create a relaxing setting. Upon waking, enjoy daylight filtering through the trees and the peaceful forest atmosphere.

Hot Air Balloon Ride

From either Elizabeth National Park or Murchison Falls National Park, soar above this spectacular Ugandan landscape in a hot air balloon, experiencing its magnificent savanna vegetation, trees, mammals and birds. The sunrise session begins at 5 a.m., while the sunset session starts at 4 p.m. The flight lasts approximately 2 hours and is accompanied by an experienced pilot.

Best Time to Visit Murchison Falls

Visit this park between December and February or June and September to enjoy easily passable roads and increased chances of wildlife observation. During these dry seasons, animals congregate near water sources.
