Oslo's History
Founded around 1048, Oslo was originally a small Viking village. It became the capital of Norway under Håkon V in the 13th century. After being destroyed by fire in 1624, it was rebuilt and renamed Christiania in honour of King Christian IV. In 1925, the city reclaimed its original name, Oslo, marking a renewal following the country's independence. The 19th century saw the city modernize, with the construction of the Royal Palace and Parliament, as well as industrial growth thanks to its port and shipyards.
Oslo Today
Today, Oslo is a modern and vibrant city, blending culture, nature and innovation. Sites such as Oslo Opera House, the Astrup Fearnley Museum and the waterfront redevelopment testify to its 21st-century development. Oslo is also an international diplomatic hub, famous for the 1952 Olympic Games and the Oslo Accords of 1995, and remains an essential destination for culture enthusiasts with its world-renowned artistic institutions.
